What Is the Bentwood Technique?

The bentwood process involves using steam to soften wood (beechwood) so it can be bent into a desired shape. The mold keeps the wood in place as it cools and dries, and once rigid, the wood remains curved.

Michael Thonet, a German cabinet maker, invented the bentwood technique in the 1830s. He later took it to factory production in the 1850s in Czechia. This technique marked a shift from laborious, low-volume furniture production to the affordable mass production of high-quality chairs and tables

Thonet’s legacy continues through Ton, who has extended the traditional bentwood approach into their modern product line.
